The lure of fame
This week saw the much talked about first UK airing of "Glee" on E4 (repeated on C4). It focuses on a passionate teacher who is trying to make a success of the high school's glee club. The glee club is seen as the hang out for the losers and the geeks, the real goal for the glee club is to help these teenagers discover their worth and realize their potential, despite what others think.
Rachel says in the first episode that Being part of something special (the glee club) makes you feel special.
What makes you feel special?
Is it the clothes that you wear, is it when you are noticed good way, do you feel special when you are given things, or when you buy something new. Do you feel special because you use a certain shampoo because you’re worth it?
Some people think that to find happiness you need to be famous, and some people will do anything to get noticed, Britains Got Talent and the X factor are classic examples, Rachel also says: Nowadays being anonymous is worse than being poor. Fame is the most important thing in our culture now.
What do you think?
When you look in the mirror what do you see?
Pink sang: Everyday I fight a war against the mirror. I can't take the person starin' back at me. I'm a hazard to myself Don't let me get me, I'm my own worst enemy. Its bad when you annoy yourself, So irritating. Don't wanna be my friend no more, I wanna be somebody else…. Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears She's so pretty, that just ain't me.
Who do you want to be?
The Christian faith shows us a God who is all loving, all caring, a God who knows us before we were even born. A God who thinks that we are all quite special and unique, and wants us each to fulfil our potential.
The teacher in Glee, Will, is considering a career change. It’s because his wife is expecting a baby, and she wants him to earn more money so they can afford all the things that she wants. Yet he knows that his passion lies in what he is doing, that to move to a different job, that will give him more benefits, will also be soul destroying. He doesn’t know what to do, he talks to Emily and says to her that he needs to provide for his new family, Emily responds:
But provide what exactly? The understanding that money is the most important thing - or the idea that the only life worth living is one that you're really passionate about.
God protects the vulnerable and lifts up the humble. God is at work among the “weak” of the world.
And maybe for Will, his passion, his heart will lead him a life of joy and happiness, knowing that he is using his gifts.
And maybe the Glee club, although they are seen as losers, might just end up being the winners, because being part of something special makes you feel special.
